Musician Visits OGS

 Story image 1_0

Guest Musician Comes to Odell – On Wednesday, April 30, OGS and St. Paul students were treated to a performance class by a prominent musician and historian of Abraham Lincoln and Carl Sandburg, Chris Valillo played hammered dulcimer, bottleneck guitar, and jaw harp for the students in two different sessions. He explained to the students that these instruments would have been played during Lincoln’s time and that most young people, even Lincoln himself, played the jaw harp. Students were invited to answer questions and to participate in the program which was very interesting and entertaining. In the evening, Mr. Valillo presented a fascinating program at our public library during which he shared many interesting facts about Abraham Lincoln and Carl Sandburg and shared several songs. Young students who attended the concert and lecture were treated to a private lesson on the jaw harp which is also called the Jew’s harp and several other names. Mr. Valillo also referred to it as the “Tennessee tooth breaker.” He is a very engaging speaker and a very talented musician. Thanks to our local head librarian, Cathy Grafton, for writing the grant which allowed us to bring this program to Odell.
